Birthdays are so strange. I have never cared too much about my own, something about all the attention makes me feel uncomfortable. But this year was different. I don't know why it feels like there is such a big difference between 23 and 24, but I do know that a year ago today I was a completely different person than I am now.
One of my favorite YouTubers, Grace Helbig, created a video about the 32 things she learned in her 32nd year of life...so I decided to do the same thing because I mean really what a cool idea. I'll try to keep this list short and sweet but with 24 things it might be long. Not sorry.
1. You Can have too much tequila
If I learned anything last night it is that you can have too much tequila and I am paying for it today.
2. I am balding
It's fine. I'm fine. I have accepted it as a fact and I don't even give a damn about it anymore. But you bet your ass as soon as I'm rich enough I am getting hair restoration surgery.
3. Writing is hard
I have been working on this book for over a year now, and it is the HARDEST thing I have ever done in my entire life. It is taking so much out of me to write this damn thing. But I know that when I finish, it will be the thing I am most proud of. Hard work equals positive feelings.
4. SLeep is good
Get more of that, but also sometimes miss out on it for a night with good people.
Lorde's second album Melodrama pretty much sums up every part of who I am these days.
6. It's okay to get help
I have started seeing a counselor lately. I used to be afraid of what people would think of me if they knew that, but now I am very open to talking about it. I think that even the healthiest person in the world should see a counselor. They help us see life from a different perspective and understand our motives, as well as others in out lives.
7. You can't change someone
People are complicated. All different and brilliant in our own ways. All flawed in our own ways. Some people are different, and that's okay. You don't have to try and understand someone else's life, because you never will. But compassion and respect go a long way. Love people for who they are, and not who you want them to be....
Unless they are toxic, then love them anyway but get the heck outta there.
8. Guns suck
Not to be all whatever, but did you know that more people buy guns to commit suicide than for any other reason? Strange.
9. staying in
It's rare that I have weekends off, but I have learned to take a few for myself. Instead of going out, I take a long shower and read a book with a glass (or bottle or two) of wine. Going out every weekend gets exhausting, and it's bad for your bank account.
10. Loss can take a toll
Losing a close family member took a bigger toll on me than I ever thought it would. It changed every part of who I am and the way that I see the bigger picture in life.
11. Family is everything
When life hits the fan your siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins will always be there to help each other up. Pain still finds its way in at random times and I no longer deal with it alone, I call my family.
12. CHicken nuggets are the best cure for a hangover
I got my chicken McNuggies and a large Coke and I will make it through this day.
13. Love is dumb
What's that one meme? Instead of falling in love, just punch yourself in the face for the same feeling? Memes are meant to be funny but like this one is the most true.
15. But do it anyway
I'd rather feel that heartbreak feeling than never feel falling in love again.
14. Grey's anatomy will always be relevant
Season 14 started last week and I will never get over Shonda Rimes killing Lexie Grey, but the show is incredibly diverse and beautiful.
16. reading is important
I have been trying to read at least one new book a month, and I honesty feel like my brain works better now. Weird how that works.
17. E-readers are the worst
I understand the convenience. I used to LOVE the convenience. And then I realized that when you finish a kindle book, the book dies. Like no one else will ever read that book. You can't hand it off to your friend that would love it. You can't even place it on a shelf as a trophy. It's dead. Done. That's not right. Buy physical books and give them away when you finish them. You'll feel good for making someone else feel good.
You can never have too many mochas in a single day. And anyone that tells you otherwise is a shitty person.
19. Always hit save
This one comes because I was almost completely finished with this post when my internet browser reset and I lost the whole thing. Whoa is me.
20. Time moves so fast
I mean like just yesterday I graduated high school and I am already two years in my career and the bills just keep piling up and those chip card readers are so freaking annoying whose idea was that please make time stop!
21. FOrgiving is easy
It is so easy to forgive someone for the hurtful thing they did or said. It is easy to just sweep it under the rug. It is easy to forgive someone for calling you out. It's easy to forgive someone for embarrassing you, and for the feeling they left in your gut. It's easy to forgive.
22. FOrgetting is not
I forgive you, but I will never forget it, and because of that, our relationship is different now.
23. Care less/more
Things to care less about: Negative opinions, how bald you are, how you look when you dance.
Things to care more about: Your skin care, how much water you drink, other people.
24. I have no idea what I am doing
I literally have absolutely no idea what I am doing ever. Everyday I wake up and I'm just kinda like oh look another day for me to waste. It's like trying cook cereal without a cookbook, or something like that.
I know that was kind of long, but I told you before hand so this is really your fault.
Tell me something you
Three years ago I made the bold (and crazy) decision to drop out of school, quit my job and move across the country to start my life as a cabin crew member. With my suit freshly pressed and my shiny wings pinned to my heart, I was ready to take on the world. ....read more.
